Dr. Cunningham joined Vail • Summit Orthopaedics in the summer of 2003 because of his desire to live in the Rocky Mountains while also being able to practice subspecialized orthopedics at the highest level. He was attracted to Vail • Summit Orthopaedics because of the team of orthopedists making up the practice who share a common philosophy of true concern for the health and well being of both local and out of town patients.
Dr. Cunningham was trained at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, regarded as the country's leader in sports medicine research. He brings a wealth of expertise in the latest surgical techniques for treating sports injuries of the knee and shoulder including double bundle ACL reconstruction, cartilage restoration, and partial or total knee replacement. Dr. Cunningham has been doing double bundle ACL reconstruction longer than any other surgeon in Colorado. He also does more knee replacements than any other orthopedic surgeon in Eagle or Summit Counties. Dr. Cunningham is excited about working with people who live life to the fullest and enjoy all that the mountains have to offer.
It is no surprise that Dr. Cunningham decided to be a sports medicine orthopedist. Sports have always played a big part in his life. His grandparents opened a ski shop in upstate New York when skiing was in its infancy and the business has since grown to include several ski shops and a river rafting company. He has fond childhood memories of being packed into the station wagon for a weekend of ski racing. Rick skied competitively through college and now enjoys the sport with family and friends every chance he gets. Cycling and running provide a sports outlet for Rick in warmer months.
Rick and his wife, Diane, live in Edwards with their children.
